Your subscription plant for July is:
Alocasia odora Blizzard
Mailed anywhere in the US - or picked up at Above the Dirt Garden Shop.
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Variegated leaves need good light to maintain strong growth, but avoid harsh direct afternoon sun.
Water: Let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry before watering, then water thoroughly and drain any excess water. Lean heavier on being dry than being soggy.
Humidity: Prefers high humidity, ideally 60% or higher. Humidifiers do more than misting. Crispy edges can be caused by a lack of humidity.
Temperature: 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts.
Growth Tip: Rotate regularly for even growth, this plant will lean toward the light. Alocasias prefer to be slightly rootbound. If the white variegation starts to brown, try a bit of silica for plants, along with regular fertilizing through spring.
Why we love it: Alocasias have underground structures called “corms” that grow under the soil. These eventually grow up toward the light and produce a new baby for you! Rootbound alocasia are more prone to give you babies because they believe they are trapped and are trying to continue spreading!
